DGFT issues order, Indian sugar export limits continue beyond deadline

  • The Indian government extends restrictions on the export of sugar
  • These measures, as issued by the DGFT, go beyond the previous October 31 deadline
  • Exports to the European Union and the United States are not subject to these export restrictions

The Indian government has announced an extension of restrictions on the export of various sugar types, as communicated through an official order issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). This decision marks a continuation of the measures and extends beyond the previous October 31 deadline.

The restrictions apply to various sugar varieties, including raw sugar, white sugar, refined sugar, and organic sugar. However, it's important to note that the latest restrictions do not pertain to sugar exports destined for the European Union and the United States.

The move to extend these export restrictions comes after earlier reports in August indicated that sugar mills in India would be prohibited from exporting sugar in the upcoming season starting in October. This marks the first time in seven years that such restrictions have been imposed, as the government seeks to maintain domestic sugar supplies and stabilize prices in the country.
